Bathroom Makeover #3 – the Biggest One Yet!

Ciao from (probably) the other side of the world! We are in Italy right now and I’ve been trying to get this post up for about 5 days, but WiFi has been so intermittent and shoddy that I’ve had a little trouble. But alas, here it is! PS – it is BEAUTIFUL here!!!

Us in Venice

Alright, guys. As you might know, we’ve been on a roll with our bathroom renovations this year! They all needed a serious facelift and we’ve finally finished our THIRD and FINAL bathroom! We started over New Year’s weekend with our master bathroom, in February we finished our guest bathroom, and just this month we finished our upstairs bathroom makeover which is what I’m revealing today!

The Do’s and Do Not’s of Decoupaging + My Own Fail

Guys. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling extra crafty and wanting to try something new! With this adventurous spirit, I decided to try decoupaging some decor. I’d done it once or twice before so I assumed I was a pro. I assumed so wrong. ? Now I’d like to share my “Pinterest Fail” and my “Pinterest Win” and maybe teach you a thing or two along the way! My first idea was to design two prints and decoupage them onto 16×20″ canvasses. That doesn’t sound too hard, right? RIGHT?? Well, my frustration began when I started using my worst enemy, scissors. ✂️ ? ?

The Scissor Folly

I am convinced that I was absent from Kindergarten the day Mrs. Hegeman taught us how to use scissors. I’m pretty much incapable of cutting a straight line, so I thought I’d be “innovative” and show you an easy way to help you cut a straight line with scissors. I’m yet to find this easy way. ?

First, I tried putting a piece of painter’s tape along the line to cut, but the tape was crooked and I ripped my paper. Second, I tried folding along the edge to cut, but my fold was crooked. I ended up with this:

DO NOT: Try an innovative way to cut a straight line on your only print.

DO: Invest in a commercial-grade straight-edge cutter or a YouTube video with better tips. ?

Tour Through an 1860’s Mansion

Over Thanksgiving, the hubs and I went back to Pennsylvania to visit his side of the family. I literally cried when I saw fall color (I’ve been a bit deprived)!!

Andrew and Hayley in VA

It was a nice week spending time with family, trying out a few local spots, seeing more horse-drawn buggies than I’ve seen in my whole life, and finally checking out the 1860’s mansion Andrew’s family has been restoring for… a few years. 😉 As his dad says, “It seems to take forever when you’re doing things right.”

This incredibly antique mansion has been given new life since they bought it. They’re not quite done renovating it yet, but I’ll take you through my favorite parts and give a little history along the way.

The Isaac S. Long Mansion

As I mentioned, this mansion was built in 1860 by Isaac Long. Isaac lived in New York but built this “summer home” (ha!) in Pennsylvania where he could hunt and spend his spare time. I wish I could have a summer home with 18 rooms!

Mama’s Amazing DIY Accent Wall

I’ve said it before, but my mom is pretty much amazing at everything (see: 4 Home Decorating Tips from My Ingenious Mama). I love bouncing ideas off her to get inspired. When she gets an idea in her head, there’s no stopping her. As was the case with her accent wall!

My parents moved to Arizona a couple years ago and I couldn’t wait to see what they would do with their new home. As crazy as it sounds, one of my favorite parts has become their entryway – you can see why.

My mom put up this accent wall ENTIRELY on her own, from beginning to end (like I said, pretty much amazing), for only $125! I want to do something similar in our master bathroom, so I got the inside scoop and I’m sharing every detail! Here’s my Q&A with the woman herself: Mama.

My Fall Decorating Dilemma, Solved!

People. I have a SERIOUS case of Fall Fever. It’s bad (or is it good?  😉 ). On Monday I had my first pumpkin spice coffee of the year and I about blew a gasket! Pure joy right here:

Since we bought our new home, I have been beyond excited to decorate for the seasons. As I started imagining our fall-inspired home, I got a little nervous about our walls being mostly gray and blue – colors I don’t usually associate with fall decor.

To add to my worry, all the beautiful fall-inspired homes I see on Pinterest have light yellow, beige, or white walls. Of course, fitting in perfectly with the fall theme.  🙄

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall…

Who’s the fairest of them all?

It’s time for Home-Deco-History Post: Round 2! Ding, ding, ding! We’re taking a deep dive into mirrorhistory.com (who knew there was such a thing?), trusty Wikipedia, and an intriguing science journal to help us reflect on mirrors.  😆 #PunIntended

Mirrors are clearly an integral part of our lives. In fact, a recent study revealed that on average, women look in the mirror about 16 times per day while men look about 23 times per day.  😎

A Reality Check for All Your STUFF

I have a hard time getting rid of anything with mediocre value. Last month I found all my high school graduation cards from 5+ years ago, looked through them, then put them all back in the Ziplock bag and back in the box. I could not bear to toss them.  🙄

Since moving into our house, one of my biggest challenges has been finding a place for all of our stuff. You know the type – books you’ve collected over the years, knick knacks, old Pinterest projects, presents you didn’t really like, etc.

As I began unpacking more and more stuff after our move, I became more and more overwhelmed. So much stuff. So much clutter. I think those “minimalists” are on to something.

Let’s take a look at this bookshelf…

What’s That Shape? It’s a Quatrefoil.

Please tell me you’ve seen this shape. I am seeing it EVERYWHERE right now! Take a look:

-all these links are displayed at the bottom of this post-

I didn’t realize the extent of its popularity until we began buying home décor. Now we have two rugs and several sets of sheers with this design! And this is probably definitely just the beginning…

My curiosity got the best of me and I began to wonder… Where did it come from? What does it mean? After looking for a good 30 minutes, I was only lead to dead ends. Leave it to my superhero husband to find its name in approximately 30 seconds. It’s called…
