DIY Master Bathroom Makeover – Bye-Bye, Arizona Tan!

Well, Happy New Year, everyone!! I hope 2017 has been treating you well! Ours involved giving our master bathroom a much-needed makeover. Seriously.  It was (what I like to call) “Arizona tan” city!

So, over New Years weekend we did some MASSIVE changes – painting the walls and cabinets, adding an accent wall, framing our mirror, and hanging some hardware!

Without further adieu…

Master Bathroom Makeover Before & Afters

Here’s our bathroom vanity before…

After!

Holy blue, holy fresh! Can you believe this is the same bathroom? I can’t. Let’s take another look.

Before

After

P.S. – I hung those floating shelves myself using my own step-by-step guide. I was SO proud! 🙂

Does our wood accent wall look familiar? I used the same boards and painting technique as my mom, which I talked about in my article Mama’s Amazing DIY Accent Wall!

I bought the same pine tongue-and-groove boards from Lowe’s that my mom had used. First, I stained them with a water-based stain in American Walnut. The dark undercoat helped give the wood a rustic look. Once it was dry, I white-washed the boards with a mixture of 2/3 water and 1/3 white paint. Then, I sanded them lightly to reveal the texture of the wood. Here’s the transformation:

Finally, we built the wall! It actually went up relatively quickly since the boards had grooves that fit into each other. We cut the boards with a handsaw and a miter block then nailed them into the wall studs with a nail gun.

Cabinets

You may have noticed we also painted our cabinets! This was kind of a last-minute decision. After we finished painting and the walls, the cabinets felt even more outdated than they already were. I searched Pinterest for tutorials and followed this tutorial from DIY-stinctly Made, a cute DIY blog!

In a nutshell, we took all the drawer fronts off, cleaned them with Krud Kutter, sanded them, then did a couple coats of paint – Sherwin Williams’ Repose Gray. Once they were dry, we re-assembled them and installed the handles!

Mirror

Last but not least, we framed our mirror! It was a SUPER easy DIY project, and I’ve laid out the step by step tutorial in this post! Oh, and it only cost us about $10. WIN!

After we had everything painted and put together, I went nuts at Hobby Lobby. Is there really any other option? I stumbled across a corner with 3 aisles decor at 66% off! Magic!

Guys, we did this all in about 5 days! I think this is a personal record for a room makeover. I’m clocking it!

Are there any big projects you’re taking on in 2017? This is the first of many for us. Let me know in the comments what you’re tackling this year!

    1. Hi J’nea! Thanks for stopping by! I got the towels at Kohl’s! I’m not sure if they’re supposed to be reversible, but they’re primarily grey on one side and white on the other side so it’s nice to use them either way! 😂

      1. I’ve been looking for towels just like those! The fact that they’re reversible makes them even better! 😂 Thank you!

    1. Thank you, Kayla! We actually found that used on an app called OfferUp, like Craig’s List! We were able to find matching one to use in another bathroom, too! Anyway, sorry I can’t be of more help!

  1. Such a big improvement! I love the way you pulled together the new wall color with the shiplap and other new features. Great job.
