Earlier this week I was catching up on “This is Us” – wait, have you seen it? If not, please go binge the whole thing right now (guaranteed tears). Anyway, in one scene Kate had family coming over and she was frantically trying to get her apartment ready. She repeatedly throws a blanket over the couch and says, “This THROW won’t THROW!!!” I laughed so hard because that was ME, just that morning!

Why does it seem so difficult to throw a blanket on a couch and make it look… good? Is it just me? I always see effortlessly thrown blankets on Pinterest, but when I do it, it NEVER looks like that. I learned 10 ways to style a throw blanket and I’m going to share the steps for each one! Let me tell you, it’s a lot more folding and primping than actual throwing! Those liars. LOL.

The Fold & Throw

Possibly the most “classic” of all the looks! Fold the throw blanket in half vertically, grab from the middle of the folded edge and throw to the corner of the couch. Play around with the edges of the blanket and create ripples in the top layer of the blanket to achieve the desired look. Inspired by Better Homes & Gardens.

The Orderly Approach

For a more structured look, try this “orderly” approach! Fold the throw blanket in thirds lengthwise, then drape over the back of the couch so the bottom falls at the base of the cushion. Inspired by Better Homes & Gardens.

The Lazy Throw

Another classic look! Fold the throw blanket in half vertically, then throw it over the back of the couch at an angle and gently spread it out towards the bottom. Create ripples in the top layer of the blanket for a super casual look.

The Flip & Flop

This one couldn’t get more simple. Fold the throw blanket in half vertically, then fold it over your arm. Toss it over the corner of the sofa. Boom, done. Inspired by Better Homes & Gardens.

The Over-the-Arm Lazy Throw

I really like this one! It looks especially… comfy! LOL. Fold the throw blanket in half vertically, then in half vertically again. Drape over the arm of the couch and if possible, gently tuck between the arm and seatback to hold it in place. Fan out the bottom of the throw blanket over the seat cushion and create ripples for a comfy-casual look.

The Waterfall

Similar to the Orderly Approach, but it makes a bit more of a statement. Fold the throw blanket in thirds lengthwise, then drape it over the back of the couch, push it into the back crevice, and over the front of the couch.

The Casually Uneven Throw

This style is great if your throw has a fringe on the edges – it really shows them off! Pretend like you’re folding the throw blanket in half vertically, but make one side about 4” wider than the other. Drape it over the back of the couch exposing both edges. Create ripples in the top layer of the blanket for a comfy look.

The Up & Over

This is another simple style that’s quite sleek. Just fold the throw blanket in half vertically twice, lay it over the arm of the chair and tuck into each side of the cushion.

The Nautical Knot

This one is a bit different and I kind of love it! It would look especially good if you have a nautical theme in the room. Fold the throw blanket in half vertically, then in half vertically again. Grab the end third of the blanket, wrap it around your arm and pull it through to create a loose knot on the end. Throw over the corner of the couch and fan out the loose end of the blanket. Primp the knot a bit, too.

The Oh-Crap-There’s-a-Stain-on-My-Throw

Hehehehe. Okay, so there are a bunch of ways you could hide a stain, but this one would work especially well (like, when company is on their way over)! Fold the throw blanket in half and lay it over the back of the couch. Then, open up the blanket so the stain disappears to the back!

So, are you now a blanket throwing PRO? Keep this post on hand by pinning it for later and never be caught with ugly throws again!
